Who we are

Since 1923, H.G. Matthews has been crafting bricks with traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Founded by Henry George Matthews, our family-run yard has evolved from coal to wood firing, producing bricks that grace some of England’s most prestigious buildings.

Traditional Skills

Keeping Tradition Alive

While investing in modern technology to stay efficient, we remain dedicated to preserving the traditional skills that define our products. Our handmade bricks are fired in traditional updraft Scotch kilns, unchanged in design since Roman times, ensuring an authentic and time-honoured quality.

The Clay of the Chiltern Hills

Our bricks are made from a unique clay found only in the Chiltern Hills, lending them their distinctive and beautiful colours. This rare clay is difficult to extract, making large-scale brickmaking impossible in this area, but ensuring that each brick we produce is truly special.

Surviving Through Quality and Service

By focusing on quality and customer service, we’ve endured as one of the few smaller yards in an industry that has seen the closure of hundreds of brickworks over the last century. Once one of over fifty independent brickmakers in Buckinghamshire, we are now the last remaining works in the county.

Commitment to Heritage

Supporting Local Character and Heritage

The decline of traditional brickyards has led to a loss of local character in buildings, with mass-produced bricks replacing handmade ones. Despite this trend, our bricks remain in demand, especially in quality new builds and conservation projects. We take pride in supporting the heritage of the Chilterns and contributing to the beauty of buildings across the country.
